Capstone to manage timeless boutique Cambridge hotel: The Clements

Capstone Hotel Management has been appointed the management company for The Clements Hotel, a 29-room boutique property opening in early 2025 in the heart of Cambridge township.

The Clements Hotel is Cambridge’s original beaux-arts hotel, named after Archibald Clements, who built the original Masonic hotel in 1866 (later destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1911). Owners Gerry Westenberg and Jo Pannell have reimagined and meticulously restored the heritage building, inspired by London’s prestigious Claridge’s hotel.

Clare Davies, Founder and Managing Director at Capstone Hotel Management, says: “We are privileged to be part of this remarkable transformation of Cambridge’s historic Masonic Hotel into a sophisticated and timeless boutique property. We congratulate the owners on their stunning renovation – which has been a true labour of love spanning multiple years to preserve many of the hotel’s original features, from the sweeping wooden staircase, stained-glass windows, to the red brick walls and high ceilings.”

“Once open, the hotel will cater to the discerning requirements of international leisure guests travelling the Golden Triangle while providing an approachable luxury accommodation option for domestic travellers and event planners. We look forward to welcoming guests and Cambridge locals to experience the Clements hospitality in early 2025,” concluded Clare.

Featuring 29 elegantly appointed guest rooms and suites with spacious bathrooms, marble floors, and luxurious amenities, The Clements Hotel offers a refined, soulful boutique experience complemented by five-star service. Rooms range from Deluxe to the premium Clements Suite, with options for stays in the new attic floor with leafy Cambridge views or in the original Edwardian rooms with high ceilings, accessed from the grand staircase.

Elegant Dining Options & Speakeasy

Set amidst landscaped gardens, The Stables where horses once resided over a century ago, have been transformed into three large, interlinked private rooms with a luxury cottage aesthetic. Guests in the corner suite will enjoy a gas fireplace and private courtyard. The Clements Suite offers the ultimate in relaxation and privacy, featuring the finest quality furnishings, a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower and claw-foot bathtub, and a beautifully appointed 30sqm terrace for alfresco dining.

Anchored by the signature Gallery Restaurant overlooking the terrace and gardens, the hotel will take guests on a compelling culinary journey, blending global inspiration with Cambridge’s regional and in-season produce. The all-day Clements Café & Wine Bar offers a seamless transition from morning coffee and pastries to causal daytime fare, and into an evening wine bar featuring aperitivo hour.

The original 150-year-old basement has been converted into an authentic underground speakeasy bar named “1866.” Inspired by the iconic speakeasy bars of Chicago, 1866 promises to be a vibrant spot known for its intimate stage, live music, and craft cocktails.

The Clements Hotel also provides spaces for gatherings, including a conference room, boardroom, an events lawn, and the restaurant and bar areas, ideal for intimate meetings, events and weddings.

Located at 68 Duke Street in Cambridge, The Clements is moments away from the town’s world-class sporting venues, tourism attractions, exceptional eateries, shopping and historical sites. The hotel is a short 15-minute drive from Hamilton International Airport and 1.5 hours from Auckland International Airport.  For more information, visit clements.co.nz
