The results of this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) have been announced with a record number of first-time wins.

Celebrating its 22nd edition, DWWA is the world’s largest wine competition. This year, wines from 57 countries were evaluated by 248 international experts, including 22 Master Sommeliers and 72 Masters of Wine.

This year, 50 Best in Show medals were awarded (representing just 0.30% of all wines tasted), alongside 137 Platinum and 732 Gold medals, both an increase on last years’ with the overall medals in total increasing from 81.5% to 82.2% this year.

In addition, the popular Value Gold Top List recognised top quality wines priced under £15 has also seen an increase form 20 wines to 30 this year.

New Zealand came in at number 11 in the total number of medals awarded by country, with 303 medals – 1 Best in Show, 1 Platinum, 24 Gold, 139 Silver and 138 Bronze.

The Best in Show award went to Craggy Range Martinborough Pinot Noir 2024.

“We are excited to share that our 2024 Martinborough Pinot Noir has been awarded ‘Best in Show’ and an outstanding 97 points at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards, an honour achieved by only 50 wines out of more than 16,000 entered from across the globe,” said the Craggy Range team.

“This prestigious international accolade is a huge recognition for the small but mighty Martinborough region, where we have been proudly farming our estate-grown grapes for over 25 years.

Judges described the wine as “an uncompromisingly dark wine that plays to New Zealand’s strengths in terms of purity and vivacity of fruit: raspberry, cherry and plum come streaming from the glass, and the fine meshing of fruit and oak in this wine adds to its lustre and appeal”.

The Platinum medal went to McArthur Ridge Southern Tor Central Otago Pinot Noir 2023 and Gold medals went to outstanding Pinot Noirs and strong showings in Chardonnay.
