MGA Independent Retailers appoint new CEO

MGA Independent Businesses Australia (MGA) has announced the appointment of Martin Stirling as its new CEO.

Stirling has been part of MGA’s leadership team for the past two and a half years, serving as Director of Legal Services and will commence his new role on 1 July 2025.

During his time at MGA, he has led the organisation’s industrial relations and legal policy agenda, championing reforms to benefit the independent retail sector.

Stirling told National Liquor News he is honoured to be stepping into a new position.

“Taking on this role is incredibly meaningful to me because my career has always centred around people and the work that shapes their lives. I was drawn to employment law and business advocacy because work isn’t just about income, it’s about identity, purpose and security; it is also about prosperity and reward for business owners and their communities,” he said.

“To step into a leadership role where I can advocate for our members, especially when it matters most, is not just a responsibility, it’s a privilege I’m proud to carry.”

Stirling said championing independent retail is important because MGA’s members are the heart of their communities.

“These are businesses run by passionate people who are not just selling products, they’re creating local jobs, building relationships, and supporting neighbourhoods. I find their commitment inspiring. When they face challenges, I’m committed to standing alongside them, drawing on my legal expertise and advocacy skills to ensure their interests are represented and their voices are heard,” he told National Liquor News.

He added that his goal is to ensure independent businesses remain strong, competitive and heard.

“I’ll continue to ensure that our independent liquor members, and all our members, are heard by standing up for them in the spaces where decisions are made. That includes engaging with policymakers, challenging unfair regulation, and making sure their contributions to the economy and the community are recognised.”

He continued: “I believe most employers genuinely want to do the right thing, and I want to help them succeed in a system that can often feel like it’s built to catch people out. Our advocacy is grounded in both principle and practical experience, and I’ll keep using both to fight for a fairer operating environment.”

Prior to joining MGA, Stirling held senior legal and regulatory roles across both private, government and not-for-profit sectors.

“I enjoy the challenge of translating technical regulation into practical support, and when needed, mounting a strong defence on behalf of our community. I’m passionate about influencing public policy in a way that reflects the realities our members face on the ground,” he said.

MGA President, Grant Hinchcliffe said this experience has earned Stirling trust from the organisation’s members and the respect of policymakers and industry stakeholders.

“His understanding of the regulatory and commercial environment, and his passion for representing independent businesses, made him the clear choice to lead MGA into the future.” Stirling succeeds outgoing CEO David Inall, who led MGA through a period of strategic growth and expanded advocacy efforts.
