Secolo CBD and Balmain owners open the doors on Tessuto

The team behind Secolo CBD and Balmain have today opened Tessuto, an Italian trattoria serving up innovative takes on classic Italian dishes.

The venue is set on the ground floor of a refurbished 190-year-old building in York Street in Sydney’s CBD. Terrazzo flooring, a custom marble bar, and timber panelling create an atmosphere reminiscent of a genuine Italian eatery.

“Every venue we’ve ever had has been located somewhere that has its own story to tell,” says Tanja Arienzale, Tessuto co-owner alongside Anthony and Robert Arienzale. “It’s something that’s really important to us and particularly with the length of time this property has been around, we wanted to honour it.”

Mattia Senesi is heading up the kitchen, and the chef has devised an Italian-inspired menu with the likes of carbonara scrambled eggs, roasted eggplant bruschetta, and a Blue Swimmer crab omlette.

“Office workers don’t tend to have a lot of time to stop for lunch during the week, but that doesn’t mean they should have to sacrifice on quality and taste,” says Senesi. “Our dishes are perfect for whether you’re looking for a quick lunch to break up the day, or something more leisurely, where you can really savour the experience.”

Ensuring an abundance of caffeine, barista Salvatore Messina’s menu includes a tiramisu iced latte, a Picciriddu (an espresso with pistachio cream and a pistachio rim), and a ‘Dirty Sicilian’ (espresso and hot chocolate).

“Italians love their coffee just like Australians do, but have their own flavours and traditions, which we’re excited to introduce to Sydneysiders,” says Anthony.

“Similar to the trattorias of Italy, we want this to be a vibrant place where everyone knows everyone, and people gather together over good food, coffee and drinks,” he says.
