Woolworths New Zealand has announced an exclusive New Zealand launch of Tearless Onions – a new product set to transform the cooking experience for Kiwis.
Pukekohe based producers, A.S. Wilcox say these innovative onions offer an uncompromised flavour that is slightly sweeter than regular brown onions, all while reducing tears and irritation during food preparation. Available in a handy, convenient pack size, Tearless Onions are perfect for both raw and cooked dishes.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer Tearless Onions to our customers,” said Ryan McMullen, General Manager of Fruit and Veg at Woolworths New Zealand. “We understand the frustration of watery eyes in the kitchen, and this product is a game-changer. It’s a testament to our commitment to providing innovative and convenient solutions that make everyday life easier.”
Three Month Season
Tearless Onions are available exclusively in Woolworths stores nationwide from June 16, for three months. Unfortunately the onions are not available through hospitality trade suppliers, but foodie chefs might want to try them on the home front!
“Developing the ‘Happy Chop’ has been a journey of learning and collaboration” said Scott Harvey, Onion Crop Manager at Wilcox. “Working with Nunhems and drawing insights from Woolworths Australia’s experience has been invaluable. We’re thrilled to bring this onion to New Zealand consumers.”
“What makes the ‘Happy Chop’ special is its significantly lower pyruvic acid level, which is what causes tears. Despite this, the sweetness is comparable to regular onions, offering a mild and delightful taste. It’s an onion designed for everyone who loves the flavour but not the tears.
“Our long-standing partnership with Woolworths is something we deeply value. We’re excited to work together to bring the ‘Happy Chop’ to market, ensuring consumers have access to this exceptional product.”
