The Calyx, which is nestled in the heart of Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, in partnership with Laissez-faire Catering, Simply Seated and Connected Event Group brought to life “Alchemy of a Rainforest” – a sensory rainforest experience and horticultural display featuring a glowing cocoon canopy, rare rainforest flora and the largest “green wall” in the southern hemisphere.

The launch of the “Alchemy of a Rainforest” exhibition offered a blend of art, innovation and sustainability. Enormous walk-through sculptures, towering outdoor trees, and rare rainforest plans created a stunning atmosphere, paying homage to one of the earth’s oldest ecosystems.

What was the planning process for the event?

Royal Botanic Garden Sydney planned and delivered the event, working closely with partners to create an immersive experience.

The horticultural team designed and curated the new living exhibition, featuring more than 20,000 plants, blending art, nature and innovation into a breathtaking display that served as a unique backdrop for the event.

From conceptualising the exhibition to ensuring sustainable practices, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney collaborated with Laissez-faire Catering, Simply Seated for styling, and Connected Event Group for audiovisuals.

The Calyx was transformed into a captivating event space that celebrated conservation and highlighted the beauty of Sydney’s natural heritage.

What were the highlights of the event?

There were many highlights on the night, including:

  • DJ Alice Q’s mix of beats on the outdoor terrace with Sydney’s cityscape in the background.
  • A powerful performance from didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton and violinist Veronique Serret.
  • A sensory theatrical performance by Erth puppeteers, featuring a cassowary, magpies and kookaburras.
  • An overhead canopy made from recycled materials, created by theatre artists ERTH.
  • Larger-than-life sculptures by environmental artist Jane Gillings, including Cairns birdwing butterflies, gigantic fruits, flowers and fungi.
  • Botanical cocktails Sweet Earth and Honey Blossom served in martini glasses on arrival.
  • Nature-inspired dishes included gin and sage salt-cured lamb with white pepper yam, and vegan roasted eggplant and tahini pannacotta with toasted macadamia.
