In a move that marks the end of an era for the Liquor Stores Association of Western Australia (LSA WA), Lou Spagnolo has announced his departure after an extraordinary 15-year tenure as President.

Acknowledged as the longest-serving president in the association’s 72-year history, Spagnolo’s leadership has been a defining force in advocating for the rights and interests of independent liquor retailers across the state.

Spagnolo, who first joined the LSA WA board in 2005, made the decision to step down at the association’s recent annual general meeting, capping off a remarkable career that has seen him navigate the association through both challenging and transformative times.

“It has been an honour and a rewarding experience to serve in this role, made even more meaningful by the unwavering support of our members, business partners and stakeholders across the political spectrum,” said Spagnolo.

Championing independent liquor retailers

Spagnolo’s tenure as President has coincided with a complex landscape in WA’s liquor retail environment, challenged by several issues such as liquor restrictions, licensing and ongoing retail crime. With Spagnolo as President, LSA WA not only responded effectively to these challenges but also made important strides in securing a sustainable future for independent liquor stores throughout Western Australia.

“We have made significant strides in securing a sustainable future for independent liquor stores across Western Australia, which help provide local jobs and foster long term economic advantages for WA,” he said.

“I am grateful for everyone who has contributed to the make-up of the industry and their continual support for our organisation.”

His focus on protecting and promoting the interests of independent operators within the competitive liquor market has left a lasting legacy. By forging strong relationships with both industry stakeholders and government bodies, Spagnolo helped ensure that the needs of local retailers were not sidelined in favour of larger corporate interests.

A strong foundation for the future

Peter Peck, Chief Executive of LSA WA, paid tribute to Spagnolo’s leadership, describing his commitment to the industry as “second to none.” He added that Spagnolo’s leadership had been “the bedrock” of the association for more than a decade, providing a stable and unwavering presence during periods of both growth and uncertainty.

“Lou has been a strong and supportive leader since I’ve come on board and it’s a loss to the association, we can’t deny that,” said Peck.

“With change comes opportunity,” Peck said, acknowledging that while Spagnolo’s departure represents a loss for the association, there are “good people ready to step up and guide us through that change”.

Deputy President Steve Nicoloff will act as interim President until a new leader is elected at the board’s meeting in early 2025, ensuring that the LSA WA’s commitment to its members and the independent liquor retail sector continues without disruption.

A legacy of dedication

Spagnolo’s decision to step down marks the end of a long chapter in the history of LSA WA. His leadership has shaped the association into a formidable advocate for independent liquor retailers in WA.

In reflecting on his time as President, Spagnolo expressed his gratitude for the many individuals and groups who supported him throughout his tenure.

“I am grateful for everyone who has contributed to the make-up of the industry and their continual support for our organisation,” he said.

As the LSA WA turns a page, there is no doubt that the strong foundation Spagnolo helped build will continue to benefit independent liquor stores across the state. With a new president on the horizon, the association’s focus on supporting its members and advancing the interests of the independent liquor sector will remain at the forefront of its mission.

For Spagnolo, it’s time to call “last drinks” on a remarkable chapter, but his influence on the association and the industry will be felt for years to come.
