The final piece of Paisano & Daughters’ Australia Street dining strip is up and running in Newtown. Osteria Mucca joins new additions Flora and Mister Grotto alongside Continental Deli.
The restaurant’s name is a nod to the history of the building, with mucca translating to ‘cow’. The former butchery has been converted into a cosy dining room with tokens to the past found throughout.
Owners and brothers in law Joe Valore and Elvis Abrahanowicz decided to channel Italian cuisine at the 50-seater restaurant and recruit Janina Allende as head chef. She joins the team after working at Pellegrino 2000, Alberto’s Lounge, and Valentina on the New South Wales South Coast.
Described as a “love letter to old-world Italian techniques and regional flavours”, guests can expect plenty of handmade pasta, desserts by Pastry Chef Lauren Eldridge, and classic Italian cocktails.
Launch plates include gnudi with brown butter and sage, lamb tartare with rocket and pecorino, veal tongue with salsa verde, a coiled house-made sausage, and a T-bone steak for two. Eldridge’s desserts span zabaglione with coffee granita and almond biscotti, cassata with ricotta, and chocolate and candided fruit gelato.
Wines are mostly sourced from smaller vineyards, with the drinks list rounded out with a selection of aperitivo and cocktails designed to be enjoyed throughout a meal.
Osteria Mucca is the final hospitality offering to open, but the group will soon launch Australia Suite Suites, a boutique accommodation offering above its restaurant hub.
