Laundy Hotels reimagines Northern Beaches pub

An institution of Sydney’s Northern Beaches for nearly a century, The Mona is being reopened in October, with Laundy Hotels bringing back nostalgic memories for lifetime locals and maintaining a long-held connection with the local Mona Vale community.

Now under the leadership of local cinematographer-turned-publican, Ben Hanson, The Mona has lived many lives since it opened in 1925. Formerly known as the Old Rex Hotel and Park House, the venue will officially embark on its new chapter as The Mona over the upcoming October long weekend, with a suite of launch events planned from 4 October.

Arthur Laundy and Fraser purchased the property in 2014. Having previously operated as a nightclub, the pair transformed the venue into Park House Food and Liquor in 2017, as part of The Syndey Collective portfolio. In 2023, the venue transitioned to Laundy Hotels ownership when Laundy purchased a number of jointly owned hotels from Short. Now, Laundy’s nephew Hanson takes the reins.

In recognition of the storied history of the venue, Hanson has created a broad offering at The Mona.

“We’re investing in live music, serving quality gastro pub fare, and unveiling a brand-new beer garden complete with a large playground, making it a perfect spot for families to relax and enjoy. Ben’s Bakery Café will open early to cater to B-Line commuters looking for their morning coffee and croissant. Plus, our woodfired pizza oven will offer delicious pizzas from lunchtime until late.”

A blast from the past

Ben’s Bakery Café and Pizzeria brings a touch of nostalgia  to the venue launch. The new offering is modelled off of Manly and Avalon icon Ben’s Bakery, which was founded by Hanson’s father Peter in 1977. The bakery will open from 6am, offering artisanal baked goods and coffee, alongside wood-fired pizzas, deli platters and deli sandwiches later in the day.

“For me, the biggest thing is bringing back The Mona and Ben’s Bakery Café. I want the pub to have that local, relaxed feel again. Both venues have been institutions on the beaches.

“Ben’s will open at 6am to serve morning commuters, mothers’ groups, and families looking for breakfast. By lunchtime, guests can enjoy delicious woodfired pizza while listening to great live music on weekends,” Hanson said.

Hanson is excited to see the coming together of two beloved Northern Beaches businesses, which many guests will remember fondly.

“The nostalgic elements are designed for anyone over 40 who may have grown up on the beaches. From Manly to Palm Beach, The Mona and Ben’s Bakery were well-known, and now they’ll be combined.”

A fresh look

The revitalised venue can be enjoyed by guests at any time of the day, with spaces catering to different occasions.

“You can start your day with a croissant and coffee, then unwind with a schnitty and a beer in the evening,” Hanson said.

The revamped Courtyard is a dynamic indoor/outdoor space designed for lively get-togethers and the new dining experience. The new menu, developed by Hanson and Laundy Hotels’ Group head chefs, includes  pub classics and elevated surf-and-turf mains.

New hero dishes include chargrilled octopus with new potatoes, roasted tomatoes, and jalapeno salsa; popcorn prawn tacos with avocado salsa; oven baked salmon with chimichurri spice rub; and tin can brisket nachos with bean chilli, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, salsa and jalapeños.

The Beer Garden and Back Yard areas have both been upgraded, with new astro turf, shade sails, and a custom-made Moduplay playground. In addition, the outdoor areas now feature five beer taps, a live music space, and a large screen TV. The inviting atmosphere is enhanced by more than 150 new plants, including a mix of Australian tropical and subtropical varieties. The Back Yard will serve as a space for events such as live music and food festivals throughout the year.

The Mona’s connection to surf culture is reflected through a new mural painted by Australian artist, Steve Gorrow. A surfer himself, Gorrow has chosen to depict Simon Anderson, a surfing legend known for inventing “The Thruster” surfboard, surfing at nearby North Narrabeen beach.

Hanson hopes that the revitalised Mona will retake its place as hub for the Northern Beaches community.

“I want The Mona to be recognised as a terrific, family-friendly, fun, and inclusive venue for people of all ages. We aim to create something that will be enjoyed within the community for years to come, whether it’s by sporting groups or locals alike.”
