Otago Polytechnic has discontinued the New Zealand Certificate in Brewing (Level 4) and the programme will no longer be offered from 2025.
Developed after significant industry consultation in 2017- 2018, Level 4, 5 and 6 Certificates were launched by Otago Polytech in 2019.
Level 4 was offered to those who were new to the brewing industry or a long-time home brewer.
According to Michael Donaldson’s “Friday Night Beers” report, a continuing trend of low enrolment numbers meant Otago Polytechnic had to make the decision to discontinue the Level 4 Certificate.
Otago Polytech told him they are currently working through what the discontinuation of the Certificate means for the on-campus brewery and Brew School products.
“This has been a very difficult choice for us,” the email to Donaldson said. “But we believe it gives us the best possible chance for the Central Campus to be financially viable into the future and for us to be a standalone institution.”
